I enjoyed reading Candice's post about the bus strikes she has experienced. She didn't mention anything about cars substituting for buses. Perhaps this custom is no longer followed.
When I lived in Rome in the 60s and 70s, there were a lot of bus strikes. It was tough because people were really dependent on the buses. The Metro was still under construction at that point, and most people couldn't afford taxis. So enterprising young men would put a number on their front windshield and run the bus routes. It worked very well!
